now makes a reed just for YOU!

We are interested in knowing what you want and need in a reed. The more
we know, the better YOUR reeds will be.

The system is simple… The MKL Reeds Personal Reed Profile System will
record your reed preferences in your VERY OWN reed profile. Each
time you order, your reeds will be made with your preferences in mind.

What will this do for you, you ask?

You will get any oboist’s dream: Your very own personal reed maker
making a reed just how YOU want it.

So how do you get started?

Simple.

Below is your username and default password. Click (or surf) to the
address link below, and log in. You will immediately be prompted to
change your password (for security reasons).

Just answer the profile questions, click “Submit” and you’re DONE!

Your personal reed profile will be kept on file for every order you
place after that. Edit your profile any time your preferences change.
It is that simple!

easy reed to practice on, or want to let us know about a big solo you

Reed “Tip” of the Month

Reed Language

With the introduction of the MKL Reeds Personal Reed Profile System,
we’ve considered what information you can give us, as experienced
reed makers, to help us create the right reeds for your needs.

We intentionally created Profile Questions that address the
way a reed FUNCTIONS, not the way a reed SOUNDS.

So why did we do that?

Depending on who’s playing a reed, it can sound VERY different.
Everyday we get requests for “dark” or “semi-dark” reeds and we’ve
even gotten requests for reeds with the “sound” of a particular famous
oboist. Different oboists play the same reeds differently, so these
SOUND-BASED requests don’t really help us make an appropriate reed for
you. What does help YOU is hearing how you like a reed to FUNCTION,
such as its response, vibrancy, and resistance.

If you want a “dark sounding” reed, think about the FUNCTIONAL
qualities a reed requires for YOU to be able to play with a “dark sound.”
If you want reeds that make you sound like a famous oboist, think about how
a reed would need to function for YOU to be able to play it that way.

We have designed the profile questions with these thoughts in mind.
