Reed “Tip” of the Month
——————————
Reeds can be affected by EVERY change in weather or season.
Here in Chicago, and in many parts of the country, we are
dealing specifically with humidity. Humid conditions tend to
make the reed look and feel very open, and much “bigger” than
it felt in drier weather.
The cane that the reed is made of absorbs some extra moisture,
therefore swelling up a bit more than normal. This often has a good
effect on older reeds, which may suddenly be brought back to life!
For newer reeds, however, the openness might be more than normal. For
these reeds, in these conditions, we do recommend closing the reed
just a tiny bit to make it more manageable. The way to do this is simple
but requires a gentle touch:
After the reed has been dipped in water and is allowed to sit for a
moment (we recommend the “soaking” technique for ALL of our reeds),
GENTLY squeeze just the tip of the reed together, slowly, for a few
seconds. You may have to do this more than once.
Remember, the reed must be moist, or it may crack. The desired effect is a
reed that is just a tad more closed than the reed you started with.
